Lunchtime Seminar on E-Books

AUL will be holding a Lunchtime Seminar on how to use NetLibrary on Wednesday, November 16th from 1130-1230. Librarians will demonstrate how to sign up for a free account and use this resource to access electronic materials from home. AU Library & Press Will Be Closed Monday, November 14th

In recognition of the efforts across AETC in support of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita recovery, Gen Looney and LtGen Lorenz have proclaimed Monday, November 14th an AETC Down Day, to include all civilians. Both AUL and AU Press will close that day. AU Library will be open Friday (11 November) 0800-1645; Saturday (12 November) 0800-1645; Sunday (13 November) 1300-1645; CLOSED Monday (14 November) for AETC "Down Day".

Report: The Cost of Iraq, Afghanistan & Enhanced Base Security since 9/11

CRS Report to Congress, 23 pages; brief summary from the report:

"Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, CRS estimates that the Administration hasllocated a total of about $361 billion for military operations, reconstruction,embassy costs, and various foreign aid programs in Iraq and Afghanistan, and forenhanced security at defense bases. This total includes $50 billion in “bridge”funding for the Department of Defense (DOD) provided in H.J.Res. 68 /P.L.109-77,a FY2006 Continuing Resolution, which was signed by the President on September30, 2005. More funds will be needed by DOD to cover the rest of the year.


That total includes some $330 billion for DOD and $31 billion for foreign aid programs and embassy operations. If the bridge funds are split in a fashion similar to FY2005, funding would total about $255 billion for Iraq, about $83 billion for Afghanistan, and $24 billion for base security. Iraq’s total is split between $230 billion for DOD and $25 billion for foreign operations. Afghanistan’s total includes $77 billion for DOD and $6 billion for foreign operations. All base security funds go to DOD. Based on a CBO estimate that assumes a gradual drawdown in U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan between FY2006 and FY2010, war-related costs could total about $570 billion by the end of 2010...."

Air University Change of Command

The Air University change of command will be held on Wednesday, 12 October 2005, 1000, at the Wright Flyer in Maxwell Air Park. Shuttle service will be provided on Maxwell and Gunter for those wishing to attend. Shuttle service will begin at 0900 with pick up points at Bldg 800/804 (ABW flagpole on LeMay Plaza South), Bldg 836 (CCAF, Bldg 40 (Post Office) and Bldg 1400 (CADRE). Service will run continuously until last pick up at 0930. On Gunter the pick up will be at the rear of the Shoppette at 0900. Bus service will resume at the conclusion of the ceremony, returning personnel to their desired drop off points.

TRAFFIC STOPAGE: Additionally the following routes of traffic will be interrupted on 12 October from 0845-1100:

Corner of Twining Street an Ash Street
Corner of Ash Street and Poplar Street
On Chennault Circle between SOS and ACSC

Adobe Printing Problems

From the Desk of Vicki Watkins:

We have had a problem when the user changes the font size on a pdf file, probably because the font is too small to read. When the user tries to print, the "click ok" to print does not display and the user cannot print.

Make sure the user chooses the print option on the adobe toolbar, not the print option on the browser.

To print, first have the user press Enter to print. If this does not work, then try the following:

Go to Start (because our computers are not the same, the order of the steps below might differ)

Settings or control panel

Display or themes

Settings

Change the resolution to at least 1152 by 864

When the system responds your desktop settings have been reconfigured, do you want to keep? click ok. This

change may not work until you actually see and respond to the question. Retry the change until you get the prompt.

The print screen should display properly after it resets.

If none of the above works, then try to find a workgroup manager.

New Building Design

The 35% concept design submittal is under review for the Air University Library additions and alterations. The new wing will include much needed student and scholars workstations, a centralized computer laboratory, a special collections section and much more.

New Food & Drink Policy

From the desk of Terry Hawkins (Chief, Reader Services Division):

"Covered Beverage Containers will be permitted in all public areas of the AU Library except the Special Collections Room and near the "public" computer workstations. Food and Snacks are still not permitted in any of the public areas of the AU Library. AUL staff should consume food and/or snacks in the Staff Lounge or private office areas out of sight of Library customers. Consuming food or snacks at the circulation desks, reference desks, or staff workstations is not authorized. Please ensure all messes or accidental spills are completely cleaned up to deter 'critters'.

"New signs, explaining our Food and Drink policy, have been posted in the public areas of both the East and West Wings as well as the Book and Periodical Stacks."

AU Library Goes Wireless

Six Wireless Access Points (WAPS) have been installed within AU Library and three external antennas have been attached to the outside of Building 1405.
Access, initially, will be for students attending AWC, ACSC, and SAASS who are issued "wireless" capable notebook computers. In the future, the library goal would be to expand access to all AU students that have wireless capable notebooks.
